It’s absolutely amazing what becomes possible in business and life when you choose to change your mindset.
Back when I was a manager, I would never admit to not knowing the answers. My team would be asking me questions that most managers should have known.
What I didn’t do was curl up in a ball or run away. I just simply went and found the answer. We don’t have to be the savior to all people and all things. All you need to do is go out there and take action.

The Key to Successfully Change Your Mindset
First of all, these four steps to change your mindset will sound great. But keep in mind it isn’t just about learning something new.
I don’t want you to get sucked into your day and realize you didn’t apply these steps six months later. So, make sure you are using what you learn. This is the key to successfully changing your mindset.
So what I’m going to cover is the first thing, the thoughts, what can you do? What are action items that you can do right now, today, to help you get in the right mindset?
#1 Identify Your Self Talk
And the first step is to hear your voice in your head. Honestly, a lot of people don’t listen to what they are saying to themself. Before I realized this, I just thought I was who I was.
I used to think only crazy people talk to themselves. But in reality, we all talk to ourselves. And we talk to ourselves a lot.
Have you ever noticed that you missed what they said when conversing with someone because you were thinking? We’re only listening 20 percent of the time. When someone’s talking, what are you telling yourself?
Is that self-talk negative?
We have this voice inside our heads that we just think is us. Your thoughts and thinking are you talking to yourself. You’re either negatively or positively.
And if you’re talking yourself down, you’re going to stay down. But you can train yourself to recognize that inner voice that’s talking negatively and change that.
Examples of Negative Self Talk
- “I can’t even go volunteer because I felt weird around strangers.”
- “I could never do that because I’m not smart enough.”
- “I couldn’t do that because I’m not good enough at that.”
Well, guess what? When people first start doing something, we’re not good at it. Besides, we aren’t good at everything that we do anyway.
Every step that we take, we learn and get better. But if you don’t take that first step because you’re not good at it, you will never give yourself a chance to get good at it.
So the first step is being able to identify that self-talk. Here are some action steps:
- Write down those things (paper, whiteboard, notes on your phone)
- Take a picture of it
- Put it where you will see it, like your background image on your phone, or print it and tape it on your computer.
- Do something so that you can memorize the things that you say.

#2 You Have a Choice to Change Your Mindset
Step number two is to understand that you have a choice. You have a choice to believe that thought in your head and move forward. Or you could decide not to do that.
Years ago, I had a client ask me to set up a membership site. Instantly, my mind was telling me that I can’t do that. I had never done a membership site, so I thought I was not good at it.
The thoughts going on in my head were that I couldn’t take this client’s money. What if I messed it up?
I had to recognize that it was just negative self-talk. Then, I had a choice to change my mindset.
#3 Change the Narrative to Change Your Mindset
Thirdly, you need to change the narrative. For example, I’m not good at setting up membership sites yet, but I will be, and I can do this. I’ll be unstoppable.
Right now, your thoughts are making you think that you aren’t good at something. So you have to change the words that emphasize you can and speak them.
Talk to yourself. You will figure it out, and you will be good at it.
#4 Mindset Change Requires Taking Action
Finally, you are onto the final step, which is to take action. Action is where you grow and get better. When you are in action, it is where the magic happens.
You need to repeat this four-step process over and over again. That is what I call being in massive action.
Deal with each of those negative thoughts one at a time. Soon enough, your thoughts are not going to tell you those negative things anymore. You will rewire your brain.
That is why the saying you are your own worst enemy. And when your brain realizes it can’t keep you down by saying that thing anymore, it’s going to stop saying that thing.
